Volunteer Spotlight: Miriam Woodrow

"Hi, I’m Miriam and I’m a mum, grandmother and foster carer.

My family has been a part of the Northside community since 1994 when my eldest daughter began preschool under the church with Mrs Crimmins. That daughter went on to become the director of Next Steps Kindy for a few years. She was back under the church, where our Northside journey began. What an amazing full circle!

My youngest daughter is currently in Year 10 so this is my 27th year as a Northside mum and volunteer.

A lot has changed in those years with the college growing, facilities improving and many new buildings, but much has remained the same. The Godly values the school is based on, the love that the teachers have for the students, how the teachers pray for their students, and the way I have been welcomed and valued as a volunteer. I have participated in lots of different volunteer activities, from reading groups and excursions in Junior School, to sewing for the musicals and helping in the Cafe and with Home Bake.

I began in the Cafe in 2007 and have been there ever since! Mostly it's just once a month for me because that’s the time I have available. The cafe has a very friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Whether you can help once every week or just now and then, you will be much appreciated! I really encourage you to give it a go. You will make new friends, get to know your children’s teachers and pick up some amazing food skills from our talented Cafe team.

One of the things I love about being at the Cafe is the special moments I’ve had over the years with my children. I happened to be on the roster the day my eldest son found out he was going to be Middle School Captain. I will never forget the way he burst through those cafe doors so full of excitement!

It was very special to have my daughter pop into the cafe when she was teaching at the Kindy and now I’m loving the way my year 10 girl comes in to get her lunch and tell me a little about her day.

Want to hear something funny? I have a 3-year-old boy in my care at present and have just enrolled him in Next Steps Kindy for next year. I think I’ll be in the Cafe forever!"
