Students of all ages benefit from the diverse range of sporting opportunities offered through interhouse and interschool carnivals, interschool fixtures, tournaments, gala days, social sport, regular fitness training and lunch time competitions.
There’s something for everyone, whether you’re interested in competitive team or individual sports, playing for fun and fitness, or a talented athlete with aspirations to progress to regional, state or national level representation.
Interschool Sport
All Northside Christian College students are formed into four Houses: Booth, Elliot, Graham & Wesley. Participation and house spirit are the essence of these carnivals, and the sporting calendar caters to all students, with separate carnivals for junior and secondary students. Interhouse Carnivals include Swimming, Cross-Country and Track & Field (Athletics) Events.
Junior School
Students in Year 5 and 6 have the opportunity to participate in interschool sport competitions during Terms 2 and 4. These competitions are run through North District Sport and are played on a Friday at various locations within our district.
Sports offered in Semester 1 are Soccer, AFL, Basketball and Netball. Students train on Friday afternoons in Term 1 and then compete in four Gala Days (half days) during Term 2.
In Semester 2, students can choose between Touch Football, Cricket (modified) and Beach Volleyball. Training for these sports occurs in Term 3 with fixtures on four Friday afternoons (half days) in Term 4
Secondary School
Our Year 7, 8 and 9 students are involved in the North West Secondary District interschool Sport competition. This occurs during school time on Wednesday (Year 7 & 8) and Thursday (Year 9) afternoons, with students given the opportunity to represent the College in a range of sports. The emphasis of this program is participation and team spirit. Those not selected in a team are catered for with a skills-based sports program on campus.
Gala Days
Junior and Secondary students have an opportunity to participate in interschool sport gala days held at various locations across the district.
Representative Sport
Throughout the year there are many opportunities for students who excel at particular sports to trial for District and Regional teams, with the possibility of being chosen to represent Queensland School Sport at national carnivals. Please view the "West District Calendar" for nomination dates and trial details for team and individual sports. Please note that individual events (e.g. Swimming, Cross-Country and Track & Field) will require recorded times and/or distances at College Carnivals to be eligible for nominations.
Interhouse Carnivals
All Northside Christian College students are formed into four Houses: Booth, Elliot, Wesley and Graham. Participation and house spirit are the essence of these carnivals, and the sporting calendar caters to all students, with separate carnivals for junior and secondary students.
Our Prep to Year 2 students don’t miss out on the action, with their own Sports Carnival consisting of age-appropriate activities. For students aged 9 years and over, interhouse carnivals are the pathway to school representation for their respective sports.
Training
Junior School
To help prepare students for the various interhouse and interschool carnivals, we offer a number of training opportunities throughout the year. In addition to class training, during Term 1, interested students in Yr 3 – 6 are also invited to attend 2 x weekly cross training sessions, which are conducted before school on the college oval. These sessions are for students with a keen interest in running who are hoping to represent the college. Interschool Sport training is coordinated by the relevant team coach and conducted during school time on Friday afternoons.
Secondary School
To help prepare students for the various interhouse and interschool competitions, fitness and strength and conditioning training are offered at various times throughout the year. The aim of this program is to develop core strength and improve overall fitness in a fun environment, which will benefit students in all sporting pursuits. Details of days and times of this training will be communicated via Student Notices.
Students were privileged to have training sessions with elite level athletes excelling in their sport, along with completing the 'Pray, Play, Say’ course run by Scripture Union.
Transition from Primary to Secondary sport
The transition from primary to secondary school sport sees a few important changes to the sports program, primarily:
- A new District (North West Secondary), with district sport held on Wednesday afternoons (Years 7 & 8), and Thursday afternoons (Year 9).
- After-hours interschool fixtures (via the Brisbane Outer Schools Leagues (BOSL)).
- Communication regarding trials and team sign-on is predominantly via the Parent Portal, so students are expected to be more proactive in getting involved.
- Progression to district, regional, and state teams may vary slightly depending on the sport.
